Elite Retreat 2009 Post-Post
Elite Retreat was truly an incredible event this year, again. We say it was better than last year every year not to diminish the year before, but because the quality really does rise significantly every time. It’s not about the accommodations or the food (which was also better this year) but really the quality of people and discourse and networking. This year had a 60% return rate…people don’t pay that kind of money if they don’t think they are going to get a positive ROI.
Shoe pointed out this twitter search which is pretty neat. People tend not to blog too much about ER but twitter was blowing up all week.
I don’t even know how to go about explaining to you how good GaryV was. To be honest I wasn’t expecting much. I had seen WLTV a few times and loved it but I hadn’t seen it enough to understand the depth of this guy’s wine knowledge AND wisdom about life and business. Maybe this quote will sum it up:
I look in the mirror in the morning and say: “I’m fucking awesome.” “You’re right.” “Let’s go.”
On second thought, I guess you had to be there. Too bad you weren’t.
As an added bonus I got to hang out with some really quality people from the industry that in the past I had only met in passing.
Also..Facebook…these guys scare me a little bit but they have bright people and are completely open minded about where to go with their platform. Not once during the meeting with them did they ever say “Yeah, we’re not going to do that.” I had also forgotten how bright Alex Schulz was (met him when he was at eBay when we built AuctionAds), and he is a serious asset if you want to build a performance marketing network.
That’s about all for my brain dump from the last week. I had to declare RSS bankruptcy last night and just mark everything as read. You need to put yourself on an information diet and get some real things accomplished sometimes.

Regarding Gary Vaynerchuck – I saw an interview with him for the first time recently. I’d read about him on the web and even in books, but never took the time to look further as I thought wine was very abstract from what I do.
My initial reaction was that he was a bit too loud and arrogant-sounding for my liking – but I stuck in there. Needless to say my initial thoughts on the guy were completely wrong (apart from the loud part!
Gary is a fantastic speaker and really has passion. The interview I saw (think it was at LeWeb?) was great no matter what your market is online – the guy really knows how to connect with people and customers.
