It never hurts if you share your experiences on blogging. I have been blogging for a few years but still feeling that I am in the middle of novice and intermediate.

You bring up a good point, and Akismet should be the #1 thing to do in a beginner guide. That said, I had already thought of Akismet and enabled it for them. I’m more thinking about how a beginner should handle their first trackback that ALMOST looks legit but isn’t. Or comment spam like “I like this post, thank you”. But is spam..

Getting an Akismet key catches quite a bit of the spam, but lately its been letting a lot through.

http://akismet.com/ – It’s free and I believe its been made by the same people who made wordpress

I’ve also a lot of people begin to use: http://recaptcha.net
