PS3 Giveaway Raffle

Posted June 28th, 2007 by david & filed under Giveaway, Tech.

Back when the PS3 hype machine was in full effect, I thought I’d be so smart. I bought 2 PS3’s at $750/ea thinking I could still turn a profit. The market for them was already dropping, I gave one away, and here I am with another overpriced PS3. There is no way I can recoup my $750 outright in a sale, but I figure if I can get 750 people to chip in $1, one of them can walk away with a pretty cheap PS3. It won’t make the PS3 suck any less, but at least it will be cheap. I hacked together a connection to Paypal via their awesome IPN service and linked it to the (almost) real-time counter on this page.

So when the following counter gets up to 750, I will pull a random row out of the database, and ship you this PieceofShit3.

750/750

Update: Wow. This was a really cool thing. The tickets sold out, and the winner was chosen. I won’t link him or post his email until I contact him though. For those that are curious, the winner bought 5 tickets. I guess proof it pays to gamble big. Thanks to everyone who helped me unload this silly thing.

Update 2: The winner, Dan, asked me to post a link to his latest project.

Bought one, but didn’t see the counter increase? (PayPal address is the same as the one I used for this comment)

I got 10 tickets. The counter is not showing it. I see others report the same problem so I guess you got it all anyway.
What a cool idea this is.

I bought a few tix…not worried about the ticker, I have my x amount of chances I purchased, does not matter if it is ‘exactly real time’.

Thanx for the cool contest/raffle

George,

IPN happens in the back end, your browser doesn’t actually have anything to do with it.

I’ve bought a total of 10 (1, 3 and then 6) and I think the counter only updated for 3 in total (when I bought the 1st one, it didn’t update, when I bought 3 it updated 1, and then moved up 2 when I bought the 6..
